As mentioned previously, most treatments require a minimum of 2 sessions for optimal results, and generally scheduled around 4-6 weeks apart. It is normal for the colour intensity to change drastically over this time, and generally will be significantly darker and bolder immediately post-procedure, than the desired final result. The time it takes for this transition depends on how quickly the outer layers of skin cells shed.
For most procedures, we encourage dry healing after your treatment. In some instances, we may use silicone-based dressings to help with the healing process. Ensure you keep the treated area free from water, make-up, moisturisers, creams and oils for at least 7 days. Do not be tempted to pick at your skin as this can result in uneven pigment deposition, and can also increase your risk of infection and scarring. Wet healing may be recommended following some procedures (particularly on the face), and a light silicone gel will be used in this instance.
Avoid exposure to chlorine, salt, direct sun, hot water and saunas immediately after your procedure for 7-10 days. Heavy exercise should be avoided for at least 48 hours post procedure. Fading and colour change can occur over time with these exposures.
In addition to general skin cancer prevention, always wear sunblock with an SPF factor of at least 40+ to protect your tattoo.
Chemical peels (e.g. glycolic acid) must not be placed over the micropigmented area as this can cause the colour to lighten or fade quickly.
If you are undergoing laser hair removal or resurfacing, ensure you inform your laser technician of your micropigmentation procedure as this can burn the pigments used and permanently darken it. Where possible, we recommend having this completed prior to your micropigmentation procedure.
Specific to areola and scar treatments on the body, when showering, do take care to ensure that the flow of water over the treated area is gentle and does not hasten lifting of the scab that forms during the healing process. Let the area air dry for the first 24 hours, and continue to gently dab fluid from the treated areas with clean gauze or cotton pads. After the first 7 days, you may gently apply a very small amount of petroleum jelly (e.g. Vaseline) to the treated area if the dryness feels itchy or uncomfortable.
If you suffer from cold sores and have started your antiviral therapy as instructed prior to your procedure, please ensure you complete this course.
Continue to refrain from alcohol for 48 hours after your procedure. Additionally, any other blood thinning medications that have been withheld under supervision of your GP may be recommenced after this time.
You may not donate blood or platelets for 4 months after any medical tattooing or micropigmentation procedure. Regular plasma donations can continue as normal immediately after your procedure, assuming your treated areas are healing well and free from infection.
Please contact our clinic if you have any signs of an infection or other concerns.
