Medical tattooing involves the semi-permanent implantation of coloured pigment to improve the appearance of skin due to medical conditions, and includes the creation of an nipple-areola complex as the final step in a complete breast reconstruction post mastectomy. Also known as medical micropigmentation, it is performed with a specialised machine and sterile needles, producing results that can last up to several years.
Every patient is unique, and we pride ourselves in providing a thorough service with ample opportunity to have all queries answered. Depending on the procedure, a full consultation and treatment can take around 1-3 hours. Because of the nature of semi-permanent pigments, a second visit is required approximately 6-8 weeks after the initial visit to boost colour and perfect the results. In some cases such as scar camouflage, further treatments are required due to the nature and size of scar being treated.
Medical tattooing procedures are considered to be semi-permanent as pigment colours fade over time and thus periodical visits are required to refresh the colour. Numerous factors can contribute to the speed of colour fading, including age, sun exposure, skin type, medications, certain medical conditions, and the use of exfoliation products or lasers.
Following the initial micropigmentation procedures, most patients will only require one touch up every few years. Over time the colour will fade and break down, thus we recommend returning for a colour boost within 12-18 months to maintain a fresh and complete look.
Some patients feel no sensation at all, others feel mild discomfort, and thus topical numbing cream is used to manage this. It is often described as being similar in discomfort levels to waxing or threading.
We perform allergy tests for anaesthetics and pigments on every client during our initial consultation. Allergic reactions to pigments and topical anaesthetics are very rare and most people do not suffer from any issues. Performing the test unfortunately does not guarantee that you will never have a reaction in the future. You may also waiver the patch test and have your procedure immediately, at your own risk. If you choose to have the test performed, we ask that this is completed at least 2 weeks prior to booking your treatment with us to establish if you develop an allergic reaction to our pigments or topical anaesthetic. This gives us ample time to book or cancel your appointment if required. Feel free to book a complimentary general consultation with us to discuss any concerns and we can perform this test for you during that appointment if you wish. Please be aware that there is still a $30 cost involved to cover the price of the kit.
After a procedure, the treated area will be much darker with an intense colour. This remains for up to 1 week until the treated area naturally exfoliates, and the true healed colour starts to emerge. Following this the colour continues to mature and often will intensify again before showing its true healed colour. We will provide you with aftercare instructions (which are also available above) on how to best care for the area after your procedure.
To achieve a perfect result a second visit is required. Being careful with application during the first visit is preferable as it is very difficult to change pigment once it has been applied. It also allows us to see how the implanted colour changes on your skin after the healing process and adjust this if necessary. After the initial treatment, it is normal and expected for colour to fade up to 30-80%, and this is freshened up during the second visit. At this time, it is much easier and safer to go darker and thicker with application.
It is important to always inform the radiographer prior to your MRI scan that you have had a micropigmentation procedure. Although rare, you may feel a slight pulling sensation or irritation at the pigmentation site. Numerous studies have demonstrated that even people with large body tattoos experience little or no irritation. It is recommended that you inform the MRI specialist prior to a treatment that you have had a micropigmentation procedure.
Please be aware that laser treatments performed on micropigmented areas may alter the colour of the pigments within the skin, and will often turn them black. If an area requires laser hair removal, we would strongly advise that this is completed prior to arranging your medical tattooing procedure with us. It is important to advise your laser technician of this as well.
If you are having any micropigmentation procedures performed on the face, it is recommended that your injectables are performed at least 6 weeks prior to the tattooing. This is especially important for eyebrows to ensure that the effect of anti-wrinkle injections does not change the final result.
As per the Australian Red Cross, you must wait at least 4 months after a medical tattooing procedure before donating blood or platelets. Regular plasma donations may continue as normal, at any point after your procedure, assuming your skin is healing well.
Our state and federal laws prohibit any micropigmentation or tattooing procedures on minors even with parental consent. You must be at least 18 years old to book a procedure with us.
Unfortunately, due to unknown safety risks to bub, we are not allowed to perform micropigmentation procedures on expectant or breastfeeding mothers.
While we love children, occupational health and safety regulations stipulate that they are strictly forbidden within the treatment room due to size restrictions as well as numerous safety hazards. With current COVID-19 restrictions, we are currently unable to accommodate friends/support persons during your initial consultation or subsequent appointments. Unfortunately, our waiting room is currently not able to fit additional people, so it would be advisable to transport yourself to your appointment or arrange someone to drop off and pick you up.
